Going into the lunch time kick off at Goodison Park, Asmir Begovic started in goal for Chelsea after Thibaut Courtois' recent knee injury ruled him out.
And for Everton, in came young left back Brendan Galloway and Bosnian midfielder Mohamed Besic.
However, Besic's start wasn't to last long as he picked up what looked like a nasty hamstring injury and was replaced by Steven Naismith, who will have been disappointed not to start.
And it didn't take long for him to introduce himself to the game. Some nice play on the edge of the area allowed him to feed the ball left to young Galloway, who chipped the ball into the path of the surging Naismith who headed the ball into the top right corner to make it 1-0.
This was the start of an excellent Everton spell, with Arouna Kone seeing a nice header saved emphatically by Begovic and from the resulting corner, James Mccarthy suffered the same fate, seeing his powerful strike also saved by Begovic, who was clearly stepping up in the absence of Courtois.
